I was the biggest Star Wars geek as a kid; it was THE thing I collected and played with extensively. As many characters as I could get, ships. Made my own stuff. Generally freaking appalled at everyone’s behavior since then.
Wish it would work for me. It’s a good idea, but

A comment I’ve read that I think has some merit is that they didn’t put an end to legacy admissions, bias for donors, employee families, and other special recommendations. These are all systems that favor class and are predominantly white. So why did the justices pretend that admissions are all based around merit and achievement when they are not?
If more were being done about the systemic causes, then I think there would be less frustration with this decision. Since we clearly have quite a long way to go on the systemic issues, this ruling is pretty naive in my view.

I don’t disagree. However I spend most of my time in kbin.social/sub where I’ve already curated most of the groups I care to look at and engage with. I really only venture into /all when I’m kinda bored. Thus, so far, it hasn’t really been too terribly problematic to do that.
It would be nice to declare a language whitelist and have a filter for it, but I suspect kbin has some more important things on the To Do list for the moment, and maybe devs will get around to it when they’ve got a breather. We’re likely going to have another influx on the 1st after the alien site kicks app devs in the nuts.
You can go to that magazine, and over on the right side you can click the block button. It should be right next to Subscribe. I’ve done this for a lot of communities that are in languages I cannot read.
Just started Someone Like Me by M. R. Carey (known for The Girl With All The Gifts). Good so far but I really haven’t gotten far.

Remillard@kbin.socialto Science Fiction@kbin.social•The last four science fiction books I read. (I don't believe there are any spoilers)2·2 years agoI liked Translation State as well, though for me, the midsection was the drag. I noticed she started doing a lot of time skips and admittedly during that point there wasn’t a lot going on, but it got tedious. Finally they got to the Treaty station and then things picked back up again. I know she was developing the character’s internal world and opinions and expectations, but with how mysterious the Presger faction is and all the talking around a point – it dragged for me.

My interest is almost wholly in books. Reiterating what the best SF movies of the last month/year/decade/century isn’t really anything I’m interested in. I probably saw it. On the flip side, the 1000th recommendation of why Dune is amazing is also pretty old. I realize I’m coming at this after being an enthusiast for a long time and I don’t want to deny anyone their entry point into the genre, so we need a balance of ideas.
I guess that’s a long way from a recommendation of what to do. A currently reading weekly thread might be good though. I do like finding new authors – new to authoring and older-but-new-to-me – and maybe that would be a good way to get some traffic going. Could split it into a separate weekly “what are you seeing?” kind of thread too for those who are finding or revisiting shows on video.

Not that his own tendencies don’t lie that way, but he’s widely reported as caring about his legacy, and right now the reputation of SCOTUS for corruption and poor decisions seems to me to be at an all time high. (That is to say, I’m not a deep SCOTUS scholar, just an observer – there might be a time when the organization was worse.)
Remillard@kbin.socialto World News@beehaw.org•US Supreme Court sides with man who sent female musician barrage of unwanted messages1·2 years agoIf I understand right, this is a clarification (of sorts) to the standard of “true threat”. Ken White covers a lot of first amendment speech issues and has a very good explanation here: https://popehat.substack.com/p/supreme-court-clarifies-true-threats
So. To the practitioner, or to the internet tough-talker, what does this mean? It means that the law of the land, at least 7-2, is that a threat is only outside the protection of the First Amendment if:
- A reasonable person, familiar with the context, would interpret the threat as a sincere statement of intent to do harm, and
- The speaker was reckless about whether the threat would be taken sincerely — that is, they “consciously disregarded a substantial risk” that it would be taken seriously.
Remillard@kbin.socialOPto Politics@kbin.social•Supreme Court Rejects Right-Wing ‘Theory’ That Would Have Upended American Elections28·2 years agoI honestly don’t know. Nothing Alito or Thomas has said recently has made any sort of logical or philosophical sense. I think Roberts is trying to preserve some semblance of legacy of unbias with the current court reputation which is why I think he’s sided the past few cases where he has.
Remillard@kbin.socialOPto/kbin meta@kbin.social•How do I search for magazines and/or communities now?2·2 years agoHoly crap, thank you. I was thinking of the top bar as the shortcuts on Reddit (or Reddit Enhancement Suite) and I turned it on. I have no idea why it would remove the search capability for Magazines since it’s functionally impossible to actually show everything on that line. However, we’re in a new world now. So glad you figured that out. This is the way.
Remillard@kbin.socialto Moving to: m/AskMbin!@kbin.social•What's your favorite movie/serie/TV show opening credit ?7·2 years agoI have a few:
- Babylon 5 : The opening monologue and music score was amazing every time. Definitely an older vibe with this one with flashing images of the cast up as it progressed, but it was very good.
- Westworld Season 1 : I think it was mainly the same for later seasons with slight variations. The simple piano tune building for the whole intro was beautiful and while watching back to back would absolutely let it run maybe every other episode, or every third.
- Eureka Season 1 : The score by Mothersbaugh and quirky art is really fun and conveys the definite style of the show.
Remillard@kbin.socialto Programming@beehaw.org•Is anyone here using a GUI for git? If yes - which one and why?1·2 years agoI use GK for everything and usually only use CLI when there’s something a little exotic. I like seeing it update in real time on another screen and I like the diff engine for quickly assessing changes and making sure everything I expected was altered and nothing I didn’t. I know there are other tools but GitKraken is the fastest for me.
Also have found it a good tool for teaching other engineers (usually older) how Git works. We tried out Sourcetree but it was super clunky at the time.
If I had to find a tool between pure CLI and pure GUI I’d probably recommend Emacs Magit porcelain. Works quite well.
I"m about 1/3 to 1/2 of the way through Translation State by Ann Leckie. Pretty good story set in the same universe as her other Imperial Radch novels.

Remillard@kbin.socialto Politics@kbin.social•FBI resisted opening probe into Trump’s role in Jan. 6 for more than a year4·2 years agoThis is tough since it’s a part of the executive branch and as a result not wholly independent of who is in office. It’d be nice to have a wholly impartial investigation organization, but even then it’s still staffed with humans, all with their own virtues and vices, perspectives and prejudices.
I’ll see what I can do when I get an opportunity. I installed it and tried it, but since I didn’t have time to really dig in, I uninstalled it after the first sanity pass failed. This was Firefox 115.02 (64-bit) Windows 10.
