To be clear, Thomas is the silver robot, and Guy-man is the golden robot.
Before Daft Punk, Thomas and Guy-man were part of a group called Darlin’ (Darlin’ (French band) - Wikipedia) with Laurent Brancowitz, who would go on to be a member of the band Phoenix. The group only made 4 tracks (Darlin’ (Full Discography) - YouTube).
Daft Punk got their name when British music magazine Melody Maker called the music by Darlin’ “daft punky thrash”.
