Do any of you know of an instance that would be good for creating more hyper specific Literature/books communities? Not the big two lemmy.ml or lemmy.world or any that would get defederated here. Basically not any of the instances that are getting crushed ATM or are too unmoderated.
By specific, I mean fan communities for a specific author, series, genre etc.
I had spun up a Lemmy instance a few weeks ago with a focus on only books, music, movies/tv, and games. There are enough general use instances.
I’m currently the only user and even I haven’t been posting. 🫢 I’d be happy to open it up if people want.
That is definitely what I would prefer. But I want to take longevity into account: Lemmy’s that already have an established donation pipeline, accept community creation, somewhat discerning federation and hopefully the hosting to deal for the long haul. It would be nice to know if there is a community migration method if an instance wants to go offline.
You would be very welcome on Wayfarers’ Haven. It’s a small instance oriented towards journies, travel, stories, handwork, etc. Community creation is open.
Editing to follow up on your other comment: we don’t have a donation pipeline - at the scale I’m expecting, this will be something I can cover for now. I’m open to working with the community for funding if and when that comes. The server is on Hetzner so does have the capacity to scale. I’d probably cap membership around 500 active users to keep things manageable - I’m more interested in the community building than server management. New users need to apply by answering a light question or two. In regards to federation: the instance needs to stay safe and manageable. If there’s an overwhelm from nsfw instances, those would probably be de federated - otherwise, I’d rather keep federation open as much as possible. I’m sharing this in the spirit of transparency so that you have the right info to move forward.
At the end of the day - if you have such specific ideas of what you’d like, why not run your own instance?
What about a kbin magazine?
I initially only found one kbin instance and it was getting crushed. I also found it not as intuitive (for me of course).
@readbeanicecream @boomboxnation You can subscribe to either communities with your main account, which is why I am looking for more KBIN magazines to subscribe to, myself. Also waiting on someone to make an audiobook community on one or more of these reddit like platforms.
