Germany once again on the wrong side of history. This time the side of Zionism.
Not to defend Germany on such an action but any siding with Palestine will immediately be picked up as anti-Semitism. They’ll just get called Nazis by the Israeli government. It is not rational, but I don’t think the Israeli government is!
Maybe they should be a little bit less afraid of being called names and a little bit more afraid of facilitating another genocide.
I’m pretty sure, that Germany, with its history with jews, shouldn’t be the political driving force here
So they prefer being nazis to getting called nazis by their nazi friends. Cool. That’s a defense.
I think this is what happens when you focus more on the history of what the Nazis did to the Jews, rather than what they did to marginalised groups full stop. You end up more worried about being antisemitic than you do about being bigoted fascists.
Think about how little it’s widely talked about of what the Nazis did to the disabled, or trans people, or gay people, or Romani/traveller people.
Yeah. It’s an issue.
Thing is, being critical of the Israeli government’s actions isn’t automatically antisemitic. Sure Netanyahu and his criminal gang may want to equate the two, but it’s still BS.
And Germany performing such duties for the Israeli government and acting as the long arm of Netanyahu without any type of critical thought of themselves makes them complicit in this conflict between Israel and Palestine.
incredible, considering the place of origin of the pink triangle
They’re German cops. They knew.
didn’t say they didn’t. just said it’s incredible. specifically, i think i find it incredibly offensive to a society worth having. if this is how it’s going to be… i can’t even really articulate.
Good thing they only had seven officers in riot gear deal with this dangerous man. Anything more and they might come off looking like a police state.
Wait, I understand the whole Hitler salute thing, but aside from that and the swastika - there are symbols you can’t wear on your shirt in Germany without being arrested?!!
I don’t even think we’ve made it to that point here in Trumpistan yet.
Can’t wear SS tattoos either, or genocide denial. Truly terrible times.
Ok yes, all the nazi stuff I get.
But if that had been a watermelon instead of a pink triangle the guy would have been fucked?
No, it is exactly what you said: extremist symbols are not allowed in Germany in order to not give them presence in everyday life. While our police is sometimes a bit blind on their right eye regarding those, I do agree that those symbols should be forbidden in public.
Now the caveat: like this story shows, it can be abused like all censorship laws. But if you don’t know the history of the pink triangle as German police officer, you should be fired and send back to high school history classes.
I do agree that those symbols should be forbidden in public.
I disagree. But displaying such symbols should consider assualt, so when you punch a nazi… it can be classified as self defense.
Thank you for the clarification! 🙂
you’re a bad person
I think you may need a /s at the end of that
Edit: fixed typo
Madness.
I wonder what country those triangles and their meaning came from?
It seems likely that this is from a related demo “Internationalist Queer Pride for Liberation” that was organized by queer folks in Berlin to support Palestine, not the larger Christopher street day celebration. The news (which mostly takes the police’s word on such matters) say that the sanctioned march was broken up because they used/chanted banned slogans (e.g. “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free”). Or they could have just chanted in another language that the Police couldn’t understand, sometimes that is also enough. It doesn’t seem like there was a peaceful end to the demonstration, though I wouldn’t trust the media to depicted what happened fairly in this case. 57 demonstrators were arrested.

Not that I don’t believe that would be something Germany would do, but do you have any actual source? A single 9-second video is unlikely to show enough context to see what’s happened…and that would be if the 9 second video actually worked. I tried in both Firefox and Edge—Firefox told me it just couldn’t play it, and Edge pretends it’s playing it and that it’s a 9 second video, but doesn’t show anything at all, or play any audio.
It plays for me without audio but you aren’t missing much. They walk down the street with him, a cop points to his clothes, the end
Ah thanks. So it’s as I suspected, it doesn’t really actually prove the claim?
Correct, just a vague video
Oh thanks. Honestly, the reply tweet:
They told him and he reported it
Is worth so much more to me as evidence than the video itself.
off topic: saw the same guy also tweeted that apparently Hans Zimmer (briefly) had a post up in support of Palestine. It wouldn’t make me like his music (or worse: his impact on the world of film music), but he came so close to doing something I could respect…
James Jackson is a pretty credibly source. He is a journalist himself and frequently reports on events which receive no attention from the German media. He did some great journalism on Ghassan Abu Sittah early when the entire German media was smearing the Palestinian surgeon https://xcancel.com/derJamesJackson/status/1790768391004778516
The Hans Zimmer thing was a while ago. Some people online checked on it and said it was real as well but Hans simply deleted his statement. However I did not confirm that.
As for this instance, usually James Jackson is very early with the reports so if it happened it can take one to four days before other media start reporting on it, if they are interested in it that is.
Hi, can you replace the x.com URL with an xcancel.com one? We don’t allow Xitter links on dbzer0
Sure
Thanks!
FWIW, in Germany you don’t have the right to free speech, you have the right to your own opinion, but it can be regulated what/how you share that in public.
This is mostly also true in the US but they have a wonderful fairytale about free speech being protected at all costs to confuse people. You can’t yell “fire” in a crowded theater, you can’t knowingly defame people, you can’t post you opinion on publicly traded companies without disclosing if you hold stocks in them, you can’t show your nipples in many public spaces. It is not as regulated as Germany, but it is regulated some.
Not sure why that’s relevant, because the issue here isn’t “free speech” per se, it’s “Germany is arresting people because it thinks they might be anti-genocide”.
Which is a really bad look, especially for Germany, given its history.

I don’t see the link with Palestinian resistance?
