limux, the project of the city munic is at the same time a nice example how it could run and sad that it stopped. But it doesn’t stop becaues it was not possible to go foss, it stoped because of political reasons.

Are they giving it to Microsoft or paying for services like office or windows? Anyways, FOSS software could do miracles with that amount of funding.

It’s only fair, because Microsoft never made a single original piece of software their first 20 years of existence.
Everything was borrowed or even stolen from others, and most Microsoft software was worse than the originals they copied.
Their biggest “innovation” was the way they licensed their software.

I think the exception to this might be excel. It was so much better than most if not all similar software at the time.

Also the android Microsoft lens app has been amazing for years, better, much faster, and often clearer than all open source alternatives and most closed source alternatives while requiring no account, bad permissions, etc… It was almost like they made it well and forgot about it for years. However Microsoft just did a big UI update on it recently so I am expecting it to be enshittified soon…

OK Microsoft was 10 years old when they made excel, I’ll chalk that down to the exception that confirms the rule.
Microsoft was 33 years old when Android was created. So obviously way beyond the first 20 years.
But already with Excel it was created using monopoly money they gained from IBM choosing the stolen MS DOS over CP/M it was stolen from.
Please note Microsoft can’t sue for libel for me claiming DOS was stolen, that’s already determined in a court of law.

I have no idea why anyone would jump to the rescue of that scumbag company, that has caused half a century of security issues in computing, by removing the few security functions that were actually there in CP/M.

IBM gave us the worst possible OS, and we got stuck with a talent-less Microsoft with no regard for quality, as the world leading software company, because Microsoft relentlessly exploited their DOS monopoly to make competing software fail.

But it was very fitting, because the PC was a god awful computer with extreme latency, a base design that made PC impossible to use for anything real time. The computer was hampered on purpose by IBM to segment the market.

But because of the power of IBM combined with cheap compatible clones, and the availability of MS-DOS for them, the worst computer with the worst OS became the industry standard.

Hence the biggest innovation of Microsoft was their license with IBM, which secured Microsoft an extreme advantage never before seen in the software industry.
