A few snippets from the article:
“They gave her some medication, but they didn’t do any tests, didn’t do any CT scans. If they did, they would have caught it,” Newkirk said.
Who said that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure? How much would the CT scan have cost?
Smith ended up being taken to the hospital where she worked. A CT scan revealed multiple blood clots in her brain. Unfortunately, there was nothing doctors could do, and Smith was declared brain dead.
A mother and wife lost because the hospital wanted to skimp out on the diagnostic that might have saved her.
More than 90 days later, Smith’s family, including her young son, is still by her side as she remains on life support, but they say they weren’t given any say in her case because of Georgia’s heartbeat law. The law bans abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected, typically around 6 weeks into pregnancy.
90 days out of a possible 220 or so days. How much has it cost to keep her alive since her brain death, and how much is it going to cost to keep her alive for 130 more days? And remember, it’s not just $, but emotional health for her boyfriend, mother, son, and anyone else not mentioned/interviewed.
“She’s pregnant with my grandson, but my grandson may be blind, may not be able to walk, wheelchair bound. We don’t know if he’ll live once she has him,” Newkirk said. “It should have been left up to the family.”
And all of this for a baby that is likely to suffer major medical issues due to gestating in a brain-dead, possibly otherwise compromised body, hooped up on medication and other medical intervention to preserve the body’s life long enough for the baby to be born, possibly severely compromised itself.
Newkirk says she wants people to understand the human toll of Georgia’s law and the emotional weight of being stripped of medical decision-making during a crisis.
But of course Cons don’t give a shit about this. Woman dies, leaving behind a son, mother, boyfriend, and countless friends? Nah, that’s not important. BABY MUST BE BORN, no matter how injured gestating in a body like that will make it, making the baby a burden on other people, because GAWD’S WILL and bullshit like that. :|
You know, for religious people, you would think conservatives would find it satanic to grow a baby inside of a dead woman, like an afront to God or something, but hey, who am I to tell them which one of their crazy BS morals makes more or less sense.
I know you already get it, but imma say it for the folks in the back who haven’t figured it out yet.
More disposable bodies for the meat grinder, no matter what. More slaves to be sacrificed on the altar of profit. There can be no fun, no joy, no fulfillment for the masses, only toil and suffering and birthing the next generation. This is why they hate the lgbt’s so much, because we’re having sex for fun and not producing more disposable bodies for the meat grinder.
It’s impossible to write cyberpunk fiction these days.
Why stop after that.
I’m sure her corpse could pump out at least one more before she flatlined.
Or are we going to deny those potential babies the right to life?
/S
Don’t give them ideas.
I hate this fucking country.
Adriana Smith, a registered nurse at Atlanta’s Emory University Hospital, was about 9 weeks pregnant when she started having bad headaches in February. The 30-year-old went to Northside Hospital for help but was released after being given medication, according to her mother, April Newkirk.
From the headline I thought it was a situation where she was brain dead and it was 6 months in and the foetus only needed a little while longer to become viable and, so long as she wanted the child, they could maybe have kept it going until they could prepare for all the necessary care a severely premature baby would need. 9 weeks though?! That’s absurd. That’s just pigheaded stupidity!
Someone should sneak in and pull the plug, or the family should withdraw consent to treatment or something (I don’t know the laws).
Kept the baby alive so it can grow up and pay the hospital fees?
Imagine working day in and day out in the place that can save you, and even that’s not enough to do it because money
A mother and wife lost because the hospital wanted to skimp out on the diagnostic that might have saved her.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
… And private healthcare is highly incentivized to cause you to not be able to access that inexpensive ounce of prevention, so that you are forced to pay exorbitantly for the pound of cure.
This is what you get when you let the profit motive run the health care sector.
It is a giant, ghoullish, money extraction machine, because ‘shareholder value.’
Everthing is backwards, bizzaro world… on purpose.
It is working as intended.
It is intended to make money.
What the hell are ounces and pounds?
25.97 cm³ of water at room temperature of prevention is worth 1/14th a stone of cure, innit?
A gram of prevention is worth 1.6 decagrams of cure.
Ahhh, so we’re gestating our young in the corpses of their mothers now? That seems less than ideal.
I just want to know what’s going through the head of the lonely single downvoter you have at the time of this post. What sort of horrific mindset would prompt them to vote your comment down. Does this shithead think that this ISN’T a case of a baby being gestated in the body of his/her dead mother? Or does this shithead think that gestating babies in the corpses of dead mothers kept alive by technology at great expense is a good thing?
What an awful person, this downvoter.
Works for the Bene Tleilax
Yeah this is some Imperium of Man bullshit, wtf.
Literally the prelude to Death Stranding.
I love that game… But I would NOT want to live in that world lol.
It’s pretty much the Axolotl Tanks from the Dune series. An overtly patriarchal society that hates its women eventually decides the preferred course of action is turn them into lobitomized, unrecognizable gestational vats.
For a profit as well.
It seems like there should be a prophecy that mentions this.
Make no mistake: This is the world conservatives want! This is the desired outcome. This is their law. They were warned things like this would happen. They didn’t care.
This is their ideal outcome. Think if women were reduced to nothing but wombs to birth strong, white sons. The poor men would do all of the domestic stuff, likely including sexual gratification of their betters (no homo!!!). It would be a conservative paradise.
vomits
Stuff like this is why I say abortion is pro-life
What life will that child have?
well according to Death Stranding, the baby should have a psychic link to the world of the dead… so at least there’s that
Most conservatives could boil down their hatred of abortion to the fact that leftists and liberals are for it.
Religion, my ass… They see political parties like sports teams. They just want to win and feel like you lost.
Abortion was never a religious point until the figureheads figured out they can divide people with this bullshit.
God performs an abortion in the fucking Bible FFS
Its a real tragedy, I dont want to belittle that with my question:
who is paying the medical bill?
Iit will likely be taken out of her estate unfortunately. What a great point. As if her son hasn’t lost enough.
That’s very generous, assuming we plebeians have an estate. If I were her family I’d sue the State, since they’re the ones forcing the continued medical treatment.
I had something in there originally about “if she has one” but it felt charged, so I took it out. Hard agree though.
This is why it’s important to have a trust that your assets are put into.
My trust is set up so that it’s not beholden to any liabilities. My trustees can legally ignore any unsecured debts and leave them unpaid if I die. (Secured debts have a separate process since they are attached to tangible objects.)
And if she’s poor?
If she’s poor it will just kind of disappear. This does not transfer to next of kin or anything.
It doesn’t disappear. The hospital would be holding that bag
I saw the .nl and figured you might be unaware of applicable laws and might be concerned about her family being responsible. In reality if she has health insurance then the hospital is still getting paid probably enough to cover her care regardless of if her portion is paid. If not she’ll likely be eligible for Medicaid seeing as her circumstances have changed and then taxpayers are footing the bill.
Not the state I’m sure.
It will be taken out of her estate and her son will get zero inheritance.
Young moms don’t have money. Gotta be old, white, and male. I bet her estate can’t afford half the hospital bills. Taxes will cover most.
More likely: it goes to debt collectors, and debt collectors being the scum of the earth they are will try to trick her family into taking on the debt.
“Borrow” from your relatives, so they are creditors, and owed money from your estate.
The family should sue the state.
The family should destroy the state.
and we should help them
holy shit this is beyond disgusting
No one cares about the dead mother … no one will care about the child after its born
The unborn baby is at its peak right now because once it comes into this world … absolutely no one will give a shit about it
