Keep in mind, protests have been happening all along. This one was so huge that even the media had to pick it up. The US is huge too, that’s a shit ton of people. Some estimates are in the millions. They don’t like covering this stuff, trust me.
The team that put this together did an amazing job. It’s got a great name because it appeals to all people who are upset. It also brings everyone together and what a great turn out. Good job 50501
Edit: Good job coalition:
The Hands Off protests were led by a nationwide coalition of organizations, including civil rights organizations, veterans, women’s rights groups, labor unions, and LGBTQ+ advocates, for example Indivisible.[3] The protests were in response to what the organisers saw as the administration’s overreach on many issues: NATO; schools; libraries; courts; veteran services; fair elections; transgender rights; Social Security; Medicare; Medicaid; the federal workforce; abortion rights; and many others.[4] In a document, organizers said that they had three demands: “an end to the billionaire takeover and rampant corruption of the Trump administration; an end to slashing federal funds for Medicaid, Social Security, and other programs working people rely on; and an end to the attacks on immigrants, trans people, and other communities.”[3]
But i don’t get why none of those showed up in any feeds if they exist. I am very far left of centre (by american standards) you’d think some of the people i follow would share - or non-us media would.
Check my post history*. I post about them quite frequently here on Lemmy. They still get less attention here even. The sorting algorithms like active boost posts with more engagement which photos of protests often don’t get until they are truly enormous
For instance, here was one large protest a month ago in the Iowa Statehouse that I had posted about
So social media posts about protests often get lost in the sea of bad news and news outlets are downplaying them severely. That’s why few people were hearing about them
*From my instance or some other one. From your instance, it seems a lot of my posts about the protests haven’t federated :(

Here are a few guesses:
You are from Europe, so your algorithm doesn’t feed you that stuff as much. It has to be a huge deal, like this one.
Americans don’t get in our feed either. I have only mainstream sources bookmarked that I go through and I check every work day to post in a small American Politics community. I would know if it came through and they don’t. You have to subscribe to small sites/blogs that put on these smaller protests.
Sometimes the protests are put on by people that don’t align with your interests. Not that you’d be against them, but that they’re not “your type.” For instance, maybe it’s put on by the immigration advocates, or the Veterans, etc., etc. That’s why this org did such a great job, they brought everyone together under one umbrella.
Because we have an extremely strong propaganda machine enforcing the status quo and are also a very geographically dispersed country. The news media in America has a long history of under-reporting protest movements here.

But this is not that thread.
This is the thank-you-thread :)

Also people aren’t there to post on social media they’re there to let the establishment know they’re upset
