5 time Kazooathon champ here (not really but I’d wear that with pride) - the close-to-source fluctuation in pressure from humming into the big end (not blowing/inhaling) is what vibrates the membrane in the circle making the noise. It’s possible to play it from the small end with terrible results, same with plugging the small end to create greater pressure - sort of ruins the physics. I believe a whistle would be more directly related to built up air pressure? (or a woodwind in general?)
