I’m glad people have correctly realized that the French should be associated with violent anti government riots and not surrendering. That was a meme that needed to die.

It’s not much better in other places. Lots of us rely on being “better than the us” so as it slides, so do we, just a few meters behind.

Politicians need to actually feel concerned about how the people they are hurting will respond. Currently they know there will be nothing more than a few grouchy news articles and upset social media comments.

It’s been going on for most of the server’s lifespan. The vote to defederate exploding heads was a week ago now, and afaik the dude hasn’t commented on it yet. Admins for the instance have said “we need more time”.

IDK. I like this account but I think I’m going to close it off and go to another instance, maybe I’ll return if this one gets its “sh.it” together. It’d be one thing to be given a reason for disregarding the vote - then I could decide if I agree or not - but the radio silence feels disrespectful given the nature of the request.

“Unauthorized Bread” by Cory Doctorow is a short story about this. Great read.

Almost all these smart devices are useless. Just give me a fucking toaster or microwave that doesn’t die in six months, there is no world on which being able to connect my microwave or dishwasher to the internet is relevant or helpful to anyone but the data miners.

Indeed, but we did vote strongly in favour of defederating exploding heads and I’m still seeing their alt-right garbage in my feed. I don’t have a lot more patience for people who clutch their pearls and wonder if it’s okay to infringe on the free speech rights of fascists than I do for the fascists themselves.

Glad another Marxist said it. The problem isn’t that capitalism was always the wrong choice, it’s that we’re clinging to it long beyond its best before date.

I’ll give you a counterpoint, much as I also don’t care.

Usually a story like this would be incredibly sad. Similar stories about refugee ships sinking are awful and heartbreaking.

Most of this story is about rich people who signed up to do a phenomenally stupid thing with an incredibly, comically terrible person in charge. It’s actually more funny than tragic, and so people are able to read the story without feeling terrible after.

Caveat: I feel awful for this kid. Only sympathetic character I’ve seen so far.

The only person in the sub I feel much of anything for. Poor kid.
