mriswith@lemmy.worldto A Comm for Historymemes@lemmy.world•an interesting perspectiveEnglish26·1 day agoCats as well.
If you store grain you get mice/rats, that’s true even today(don’t eat raw flour), which leads to cats.
Humans realized that fewer mice means more grain and left cats alone. But one theory is that families who let the cats hang around their home more had fewer instances of diseases carried by rodents, which further led humans to want cats to be around.

Which is why a lot of Americans, even ones living in states where it’s 16, think it is 18 in all states.
mriswith@lemmy.worldto Uplifting News@lemmy.world•Missouri legislature votes to ban child marriage, raising age to 18English30·1 day agoOh it gets worse. This change is just the most recent in a series of states updating their laws since 2017. Because a study was released that showed almost 200,000 child marriages in the US between 2000 and 2015. And over the next three years years another ~100,000 happened.
And while it’s important to remember that a 17 year old marrying an 18 year old is technically child marriage, and 16-17 year olds girls who marying men who were over 18 or older but less than 29 is over 90% of those statistics. There were dozens between girls who were 12-14 and men who were 40+, some were 60+. And that it is still legal in several states if certain criteria are met.

It’s part of a series of articles called “Kindness of strangers”. Specifically highlighting interesting events where someone was helped and that changed their outlook on life, but isn’t some major event.
Here are some of the other headlines:

-

Specifically because it sticks in the mind of witnesses and makes it easier to get away with shooting unarmed suspects.

For example: A scary amount of Europeans don’t know that Mondelēz International is an American company. It was started by Kraft, famous for their “processed cheese product”. And they own brands like Cadbury, Milka, Toblerone, Marabou/Freia, etc.
Coca-Cola also own a lot of “local” flavoured drinks.

No.
The vast majority of ADHD memes made by self-diagnosed people who have no idea how it actually works.
They’re the same as the type of people who claim they have OCD because they like to clean up right after eating. While in reality people with severe OCD can end up standing outside their front door in the rain and get soaking wet for 20min, because they have to unlock the door in pattern they can’t get right.

They’re not doing anything because they are complicit. The DNC and the majority of Democrats are completely fine with fascism as long as it does not impact themselves.
It’s not even a question anymore, every single House Democrat proved it recently by voting in favor of the “Take it Down” act.
mriswith@lemmy.worldto Leopards Ate My Face@lemmy.world•Maga voted for cuts and gets cut.English24·2 days agoAt the end of the day they’re just selfish.
My favorite example is the “Free Town Project”, where a bunch of libertarians from all over the country tried to take over a town in New Hampshire. After they managed to force through cuts to everything from firefighting to street lights, they had a single police officer left. And he couldn’t respond to any calls, because his cruiser was broken and they refused to pay for repairs so crime rose and sex offenders started moving there.
Then came the bears.
They didn’t pay for any sort of forest ranger and the cop couldn’t respond. So bears started getting close and some people spent years feeding them, while their neighbors walked around armed at all times and would shoot at bears on-sight. Which led to the first black bear on human attack in the state for over a century, where a woman was attacked inside her own home. And shortly after two other attacks happened in nearby towns. So the people went into the forest one night and allegedly shot and killed a dozen bears, which didn’t help. Some people suggested the city put bear protection on the trash cans, but it was not passed and was called “government overreach” by others.
So the freedom loving libertarians who moved to a town without zoning laws to live in improvised housing and roam free without laws, ended up having to put up big fences and walls around their homes to keep the bears out.
Yeah, I was more referencing how cats basically showed up and were all “become more domestic, and we’ll move in and keep you safer”.
