Honestly, Proton Pass is the best choice for me. Easy to use, super comprehensive. It’s the best service provided by Proton in my opinion.

Basically Google Maps by Apple on iOS
Indeed, that’s a good question 🤔 An interesting solution might have been to leave the app free and make certain functions like speed cameras or real-time traffic accessible with the €1/year subscription. (I’m not saying it’s a good solution, it’s just an idea)
For my part, I’m more concerned about the “subscription” aspect. I’d have been prepared to pay €10 to get Magic Earth for life. But at 99 cents a year, it doesn’t seem like much, and there’s no guarantee that it’ll become monthly or more expensive, for example.
Exactly !
On the other hand, I find Magic Earth rather poor when it comes to POIs, finding an establishment, finding out the opening hours of a place, and so on.
In the end, I use CoMaps + Apple Plans for points of interest and timetables, and Magic Earth for navigation.
If you’re talking about Magic Earth: no. Despite the fact that Magic Earth is based on OpenStreetMap and has a quite good privacy policy, the application remains closed-source.
For me, the CoMaps (or OrganicMaps) application is pretty good for the map side of things. On the other hand, when it comes to navigation, I find Magic Earth much more complete (speed camera display, better traffic management, optimized interface for landscape navigation, reporting of road events, better precision of lanes to follow, and I’m forgetting many others).
I downloaded the app just to see what the interface looked like and when I got to the app, it turns out that you can’t access the app without automatically signing up for a subscription (even though there’s a free trial period, for me this is clearly a redflag).
Capslock + the letter, thats all
What workaround are you talking about ? I can easily type ÉÈÇÀÙ without any workaround 🤔
As an azerty user, I don’t see the issue with the uppercase accent letter. It’s super easy to do on linux, no?
I replied to another comment:
However, I just noticed that my 4 RAM sticks weren’t exactly the same (I didn’t build the PC).
This image comes from the CPU-X software.
2x Kingston 99U5428-063.A00LF
2x Kingston KF3200C16D4/8GX
They are all configured in the same way:
- Type : DIMM DDR4 Synchronous Unbuffered (Unregistered)
- Size : 8Go
- Speed : 3000 MT/s (configured & max)
- Tension : 1.2V
I think it could be coming from here, knowing that I don’t know anything about BIOS settings so it could also be coming from a bad setting in the bios.
The Finals is a really demanding game because the destruction of buildings in the game is impressive. Otherwise, I’ve tried several versions of Proton or applying launch options but nothing in particular happens, neither good nor bad.
I use a single SSD on the M2 port (the one for the OS + files). My games are stored on an SSD connected via Sata.
Otherwise, my monitor supports AMD FreeSync (I don’t know if that’s what you’re talking about in relation to VRR).

Honestly, the case isn’t bad. I have 3 fans in the front, two on top, and one in the back. (Properly oriented, of course)
As a light user of the drive, I find that Proton Drive is clearly the worst product from Proton. I use the office-focused functions very little, but I really find that the photo part is quite lacking.
On one hand, the transfer speed is quite slow, and on the other, the functions are extremely limited. Between the inconvenient interface, no search options, no folders, no information on the exif metadata, etc…
Moreover, I think that even if the storage space for photos should be allocated from the drive’s storage, it is necessary to create a separate application dedicated to the photo gallery. It is not natural to have to click on a file logo of the Proton Drive app to access your gallery.
In the meantime, I will stick with ente.io because it is the only truly convincing alternative to Google Photos in terms of features, compatibility, speed, and simplicity…
Sadly in France, no one use Apple Maps. (Like iMessage haha, I know it’s a big thing in USA but not in europe)
I didn’t want to justify my choice, but I have a slight handicap in my hand that prevents me from using large smartphones easily. (Malformation of the little finger)
Try and find me an Android phone the size of my iPhone 13 mini were you can put a privacy friendly os, and yes, we’ll talk.
I’ve been on CalyxOs for over two years, but the pixels are too big, so the iPhone 13 mini was the best compromise for my privacy and my disability.
I know it’s not perfect, but that’s no reason to criticise it gratuitously without knowing the context.
What’s more, Apple Maps in France isn’t very effective, so it’s not a convincing alternative.
I’ve been using Magic Earth for daily navigation for 5 years now and I love it! However, when it comes to finding up-to-date points of interest, historical sites, obtaining opening times for certain places, etc., etc., it’s mission impossible… This is why I m asking 😉
I understand your point of view, but I think that in today’s society, a company can’t afford to fall too far behind when it comes to current uses. I’m perfectly aware of the risks that AI brings, but if it can enable some people to find a -private- way out of American AI, I think it’s a good thing.
