Is it refering to people in their first year of university? If so in the US they are referred to as freshmen.

Like they got their positions not from competency but from nepotism. That can’t be true though.

Seriously this ticks boxes Ive given up on. I never thought Id see a phone with all three: waterproof, removable battery, headphone jack. It even has wireless charging which isnt really one of my boxes but is a little extra if you use it.
You want other opinions on Lemmy but don’t want to start a debate? That is a truly stupid position.
If you want to explore the nuances of pro/anti ai, go for it. I’m here with you. The person above made a point that the genie is out of the bottle. Maybe we could discuss focusing on making ai ethical rather that trying to catch smoke with our hands. Let’s talk about that. But bringing up a vague concept because you want diverse opinions but refusing to engage? That is seriously dumb.
The whole new math everyone was complaining about is trying to do this. Granted teachers are human and flawed so sometimes it has not been implemented well, but it is aimed in the right direction.
I am absolutely going to start responding to questions / statements about gender with this concept though.
“There are only two genders”
“Yeah, and there are only 3 states of matter! These woke scientists with their DEI alphabet soup of mattet B-E Condensates, and QSL, and DEGERATE MATTER! Its sick I tell you”
The books stay the same. I liked them. I read the first two in a single sitting on a (verry) long flight. They are popcorn books. Fun without too much substance. The action is told from his point of view which is pretty jaded, its supposed to be humorous, and yes its a very dry humor.
I wasnt really aware of Moomin until meeting my Finnish sister in law, so I dont have the deep roots to the 90 cartoon.

So my sister in law just got back from Finland and gave my youngest an oversized Stinky Tshirt. She loves it and wore it all day.
Ive heard good things about that comic, less so about the TV series.
A dark comedy take is Creamerie. Definitely recommend.

They have a slow steady progression of techniques that build on eachother. Same with gymnastics. Build strength, technique and confidence. No need to terrify kids.
In a similar vein, the social emotional learning they are teaching kids is great.

I did it too, but the fact that we are rolling over him breaking the 22nd amendment and then pretending like our votes matter at that point is kinda messed up when you step back.
GorGor@startrek.websiteto politics @lemmy.world•Gavin Newsom surges in 2028 presidential primary poll82·15 days agoOn the other hand, not-trump is a pretty damn good quality.
Sad but true. I fucking hate that we are talking about this fucking asshole, but like that bullshit recall election in '21, I will hold my nose and vote for harm reduction. So fucking depressing. You think its gonna be Trump again? If he wants to stay in power, breaking the 22nd amendment, why have elections at all?

The wallfacers have to have a secret plan that they cant share because the sophons can intervene if it is known. The Sophons are so powerful because they can interfere with any technology, only the human mind is beyond their reach. So he creates a technology to do exactly what he tested out that would achieve mutually assured destruction and the sophons cant do anything about it because… reasons.
It was obvious the entire time what he was planning and the result of that plan was MAD. If you come to destroy us, we will both die. He couldnt say it outloud because the premise was he was a wallfacer and there is no good reason this particular plan would suceed.
After much struggle I got some geeky friends of mine to start a book club. I suggested this as the first book based on the hype. Almost no one finished it. When we got together to drink and talk, only two others bothered to dial in (It was during COVID and we are scattered), no one else finished it.
I dislike this book in so many different ways. It has some interesting Ideas and some surprising insights into the modern Chinese view of the revolution, but as an actual story? Ive read better fan fic.
the Dark Forest sucks just as hard if not more so. the premise of the story

Mutually Assured Destruction
isnt an original thought, but the author refuses to acknowledge it until the end, pretending like it wasn’t obvious the whole story. then he hand waves the problems he sets up (how do you deal with an alien technology so much more sophisticated than your own) pretending like the sophons just couldn’t deal with the threat. All this and the character doesn’t ever really develop. Things happen to him, but we don’t get any meat to his personality, just external bullshit.
I started listening to the third book because I am a gluten for punishment and I have a long commute, but it just meandered. If it was another author Id give them the benefit of the doubt, but I havnt been able to get through it.
