Conservative forums are talking about rounding up immigrants, letting women die in clinics and stripping people of their rights and dismantling Democracy.

Here on the “left” lemmy, we’re arguing whether calling out hypocrites is a step too far we’ve got to be respectful after all!

This is why the left sucks as organising and actually voting for change in unison. A simple thing as outing assholes starts a 10h discussion, meanwhile on the right they are building cages…

Oh I’m sorry, not cages, enclosures without exists, we don’t want to offend people identifying as cages!

That’s the paradox of intolerance though.

If you don’t tolerate intolerance, you are intolerant.

The paradox of tolerance is poorly named. Tolerance is part of the social contract and one that breaks the contract is no longer protected by it. The intolerant are excusing themselves from the contract and the rest of us can and should exclude them from the society they harmed.

I’m not gay, but the idea of outing ANYONE in the LGBTQIA+ community has long been a cardinal sin, enough so that it destroys careers and forces them to be almost globally shunned. I would imagine that for many there is a deep-set conflict between outing someone that has wronged them, and not outing someone that would likely want to be accepted elsewhere where they don’t need to pretend to be something they aren’t.

The problem with outing someone is that it risks subjecting them to discrimination and bigotry by homophobic assholes. Shunning it as a cardinal sin is a defense mechanism to protect each other.

If right-wing bigots hide behind those protections, while being part of the problem that necessitates them in the first place, they deserve no protections.

If a closeted person is passing laws, making policy, or using their platform to the LGBTQIA+ community, then outing is self-defense.

i’ve never been comfortable with the usage of the term “outing gay men” in this specific fairly negative context.

their fallacy isn’t being gay – that by itself is nothing wrong and should never be associated with a public shaming exercise.

no, the problem in this scenario is their hypocrisy in denigrating other gay men for their activities while indulging in those activities themselves.

this whole series of events should be called “exposing the hypocrisy of loud-mouths” instead of “outing gay men”.

It’s not outing gay men, it’s outing gay conservatives, which already has the loud mouth hypocrite angle covered.

People are turning on each other. Like those saying Latinos should out each other to be deported. Nothing but more examples of how divisive the Trump regime is. I suppose I don’t have to look up how this kind of thing has happened before in times of fascism. I’ll bet it’s gotta be true.

I hate trumpers and all, but this is gonna lead to suicides and is essentially just outing gay people to cause them harm, even bodily harm. I was raised to think that was wrong, but I guess if it’s done by you it’s ok?

The Post said “conservative” which is a bit broad. There are lots of conservative straight men and women who aren’t homophobic or against LGBTQ people. Republican is less broad. Far right now specific and so on.

Well, I agree it is broad, yeah.

But, like… we’ll see if there’s gonna be any republicans trying to distance themselves from Trump. There were lots who endorsed Harris and who refused to endorse Trump, but not endorsing Trump just isn’t enough with this level of threat to democracy, imo.

Sucks that being anything other than straight is a health risk for large segments of the population.

That being said, enabling or fostering that same risk isn’t in their best interest. If they’re unable to be the change they want to see in the world, then who do they expect to stand up for them?

I don’t think there is any valid excuse to force somebody to “come out of the closet” against their will, even hypocrisy. It’s their choice to come out, not anybody else’s.

I would expect that gay men, given the massive prosecution that they’ve been subject to in the past (and still are in many countries nowadays), would share that feeling, but maybe it’s because I’m from a generation that grew up at a time when homophobia was absolutely normal and later lived in places which weren’t like that at all were I’ve met gay men who had left their own countries in order to be able to be with the people they loved, and were I figured out just how unfair and casually nasty I had been in the years before.

Doing this kind of thing thinking you’re holding a high moral ground because the other person is in some way immoral is exactly the kind of thinking extreme religious types have when they go after, amongst others, homosexuals.

As much as I dislike conservatives, I dislike even more doing this shit to somebody and the kind of person who would do so.

yeah, fuck that. if you’re spewing hatred and trying to control women directly or indirectly, you get what you fucking deserve. you couldnt leave people alone to live their lives without forcing your way in, so fuck you, open that closet door and expose them for their hypocrisy and bigotry.

them being gay isn’t the problem, they could have chosen happiness also and treated people the way they wanted to be treated, but injecting your hatred to a topic that you yourself are in? some single digit IQ moves.

I don’t think that outing people is a good idea though. It’s fine to point out that they’re being hypocritical, or refuse them for their views, but outing them seems a step too far, especially if it’s retaliatory.

Their being in the closet oughtn’t be conditional.

The inverse wouldn’t be acceptable, why would this?

The reverse in this situation would be a closeted queer person outing someone for being…NOT shitty and detrimental to other people?

Nah, don’t out people who aren’t shitty. But if you’re an active republican, ESPECIALLY if you’re a political configure, and you trash the gay community you belong to? Fuck em. They aren’t under the umbrella of protection the moment they try to push people out from under it.
