Five days ago, drag was banned from !politicalmemes@lemmy.world for using neopronouns. A comment explaining drag’s pronouns, and a comment saying “drag” isn’t a nickname, were removed with the reason “trolling”. Drag understands why someone would think that using different pronouns than most people is trolling - transphobia. However, drag is confused how on earth not liking a nickname is a violation of any rules anywhere.

Context of the removed comments:

Drag would like to pre-empt any further accusations of trolling by asking a question: If drag were a right wing troll, and you chose to freely accept drag’s pronouns, wouldn’t that completely neuter the trolling attempt? Trolling is about trying to make others upset. You don’t have to get upset when someone uses unusual pronouns. If you aren’t transphobic, then it’s impossible to troll you that way. And drag promises: drag wants you to not be transphobic. Drag is not trying to upset anyone. If you do what drag wants you to do, then you get what you want too. This is a non-issue, there’s only a problem if you want there to be.

EDIT: DRAG DID NOT TELL ANYBODY TO USE DRAG’S PREFERRED PRONOUNS.

no one should have to reconcile their preferences for you to take them seriously.

i don’t know why bill is a common shortening of william, but i don’t refuse to call bills by their chosen name.

the other thing is you can just choose to not interact, like genuinely no one is forcing you to do anything here.

That’s a first name, not a pronoun. Or you never use “you” when you talk to Bill? Bill does not use “I” when he needs to talk about himself?

the other thing is you can just choose to not interact, like genuinely no one is forcing you to do anything here.

The objective of this community is to identify whether mods are power tripping. Identifying them helps the platform as a whole, identifying potential trolls as well

i feel like you’re willfully misunderstanding me to some degree so i’ll just repeat the operative part of the comment that you ignored just now.

no one should have to reconcile their preferences for you to take them seriously.

i’m not trying to argue semantics. you clearly know what i meant with the name analogy, you’re just doubling down on not respecting a preference you don’t consider valid.

no one should have to reconcile their preferences for you to take them seriously.

Then should we just stop using 1st person pronouns altogether? I guess that’s the main issue here, even though the mod could be power tripping, most of the people here don’t understand why OP doesn’t just use “I”, as it’s the neutral, inclusive pronoun that everyone has been using in English to designate themselves for centuries.

Using the correct pronouns to refer to someone in 3rd person is important as English uses gender pronouns, and that should definitely be respected.

Confusing people using another pronoun instead of I and not even using 1st person forms “Drag is” rather than “Drag am” for no visible benefit, is what is the issue here.

Reminds me of this thread, where the OP was gendered as “goddess” and asked people to capitalize their pronouns https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/post/14491263

Also, I will capitalize “you” for You as an act of politeness, but I very strongly disagree with characterizing this as “misgendering”, even after reading Your “Introduction to capitalised pronouns” post. Yes, grammar is socially defined and arbitrary. For example, the only reason African-American Vernacular English is labelled “improper” is because so many (white) people with power say so — there’s nothing inherently worse or better about it. However, it’s still necessary to reach consensus on the meaning of words, else no one could be understood.

are you kidding me? can you only think in absolutes? stop wasting both of our time.

if doing something purely for someone else’s benefit is really such a foreign concept to you then i can offer you nothing except my sympathy.
