Oof haven’t been there in a long time. When I used it, it was a fun place for writing advice and discussing fiction. Loads of nerdy fanbases there and loads of fanfic naturally. I had my potterhead era there and its where I discovered lord of the rings (beyond the movies) and wheel of time etc.
And now I’m making a map of my own world drawing mountains making sure I know where the tectonic plates are, creating rivers making sure I know the topology of my land. Creating a new language from scratch. Creating gods and their stories, religions and their rules. A rough history of 50000 years so I can include none of that in a story I intend to write just so there’s good world building. That world building knowledge comes from tumblr.
It’s fun! Tumblr has been basically singlehandedly supporting the textpost meme industry on Instagram for years. I like that Tumblr tends to tilt toward text rather than
wordsimages; here’s my favorite example of that:https://www.tumblr.com/headspace-hotel/661331419218509824
If you’re thinking of joining, the #1 thing to remember is to reblog (and optionally tag) things you like, not just tap the heart icon. Tumblr is for curating a blog of things you like, and if you don’t reblog anything, you look like a bot and you will get blocked. Also, likes don’t actually do anything for the algorithm; likes are more like “save for later”.
You decide your own algorithm, to some extent, by hitting Follow on people whose blogs you like. I like that. I think it might resonate with Lemmy users too :)
Text rather than words?
My bad. Text rather than images.
That is exactly the kind of post I associate with tumblr.
I’m honored!
Given that, wouldn’t all bots just be written to reblog things, making that blockage criteria useless?
Usually bots are created with minimal effort. They post porn or affiliate links or something, and then they spam like / follow people to get people to click on their username and view their blog. They get quickly banned, and then they come back with another username. Shitty little pornbots.
I haven’t used Tumblr since 2009.
Back then it was overrun with social justice activists who constantly criticized each other in an exceedingly toxic manner. I can’t speak to how it is now.
It’s pretty much like this.
It’s got funny memes and good art posted to it. It’s actually kinda weird for the actual social aspect, though. Like actually having a conversation through it sucks.
