They retract when not in use. Because of their unique design people would often not wear them though which was really bad for car accidents. Wouldn’t recommend it. Miss Abbey here is showcasing a 1991 Ford Escort GT.

There are lap belts, you can see the metal part if you look closely at the passenger seat. They retract when not in use.
