Hi guys, I want to communicate with people here via chat if possible, and just wondering what people here are using?
I want to use a protocol if possible, and definitely not discord or some other software run by a corporation. Obviously IRC was the thing to use back in the day. Do people still use it or something else?
I love the fediverse and the idea of getting away from the big tech companies, and am looking for whatever real time chat software is recommended right now. Thanks.
Edit: Setup on Matrix, thanks guys! @xero-:matrix.org hit me up if you want!
I don’t use it but Matrix/XMPP is what you’re looking for.
I second matrix. Its also federated and has mutible clients. But like lemmy under development (but more advanced in the development process)
Cool, I’ve heard of it. What client is good to use?
There are a lot but Element is multi-platform and has the most features
Element is the most featureful one. You’ll probably want to have it around even if you don’t use it every day. Cinny looks pretty close to Discord (and is overall cozier imo), and FluffyChat is more Telegram/WhatsApp-y and seems to be one of the better ones for phones.
I’m using Element. Any channels etc you’d recommend?
I’ve been away from Matrix for a while so idk about any new and interesting ones, but it’s generally the whole Linux-y FOSS types of the internet that tend to have reasonably active Matrix channels, compared to the general purpose audience of, say, Discord.
There’s a space in your settings for your Matrix username and that creates a secure messages link in your profile, so Matrix is a key part of Lemmy, providing end-to-end encrypted messaging (a bit like WhatsApp but you don’t need to give anyone your phone number, so, yeah, like.IRC and XMPP back in the day).
I also argue here that it should be useful for moderator teams on lathe communities as you can create private spaces and rooms within it to thrash out any issues.
Nice, will definitely look into matrix.
Signal as it’s easy to convince others to use it, with a slick onboarding and WhatsApp feel. Matrix is the true future for messaging ofc, but it’s new user experience isn’t friendly enough for mass adoption yet
I use both Matrix and XMPP regularly. Matrix is what I recommend, unless you want something that will run on low-end hardware, then XMPP is better. They’re both good, and very similar.
I setup matrix, any good channels you’d reccommend?
I mostly use it for personal and group communication, I’m not in any large channels.
Nextcloud talk for my family, zulip for business and signal for others
I use Telegram personally, but that doesn’t meet your requirements probably
I love telegram but it’s hard to get other people to try telegram. I just love that I can send any file type easily and of pretty much any size on desktop or mobile.
Really? Everyone I know uses telegram
Does Lemmy have a built in chat like Reddit did?
It has a direct messaging system but there are privacy concerns and Lemmy has the option of adding your Matrix account details to.your.profile that then creates a secure message link to Matrix (which then gives you a choice of three apps to use). It’s all very seamless and I’d recommend it to everyone.
