I live in EU where fish medications can be hard to get by. Therefore i treat most issues with salt. The question is:

Can i use salt for water treatment systems in fish tanks?

From what i see, it is pure salt although a bit larger crystals than regular salt.

I have been using salt for ponds up til now, but it can be hard to find, especially during winter seasons, and also fairly expensive compared to filter salt.

I’ve never done it, as I use aquarium salt or brine shrimp hatching salt to reduce osmotic stress sometimes. However as long as it’s pure salt a little should be safe. If they’re big crystals just dissolve them in pure water first then pour the water into the tank.

I used to do that too, but with 3 big(ish) tanks, and a few tubs besides those, it can get a bit pricey, to use aquarium salt… especially if you need to do it often. Fancy goldfish are great at getting hurt or infected

All in all, i probably have 1600 liters of water in multiple tanks and tubs (that’s about 400gal)

Not really. Most fish tolerate some salt, although it varies from types to types.

In my case, it is for goldfish, but this is for treating issues such as fungus, bacteria or parasite infections. I use 3 grams pr liter so it does not change the water into salt water as such. Just raises salinity enough to fight fungus and some parasite as well as heal wounds faster, with less chances of bacterial infections.

The question is more about what types of salt can be used, not if salt is usable
