Desktop Linux’ marketshare is going to steadily increase, but as time progresses, so will the speed of that increase. Linux was at or below 1% for a really long time but within the last 5 years or so it jumped to ~5%. As this not only means more users, but also more attention and developers, this will of course snowball. The end of Win10 will also give a bump. And if the enshittification of Windows continues (it probably will) and if US-based companies are becoming a red flag for non-US-customers (will probably also happen) then it will snowball even faster.

At least in my part of the world the number of desktop users as a whole is going down with so many younger people deciding their phone is sufficient for everything. How long before those numbers cross?

Just use a live boot thumbdrive. Let her get her feet wet. When she sees she has almost no issues or zero issues compared to Windows. She’ll just use Linux by default.

One day the Year of the Linux Desktop will arrive.

And some people will want to pound the ecosystem back into the 80s because their obsolete, bug-ridden pile of technical debt isn’t the most popular (insert system component here) in the world, and the best alternative has some issues.
