Looks like a 787. They’re having issues with the paint coming off so they put speed tape over it. Damage to the lightning protection layer has been found also, which is a bit worrying. This reminds me that Boeing removed some of the lightning protection despite the FAA objecting to it. Source

Speed tape, the goal is to reduce drag for small things like paint chips and such. During takeoff/landing, the most dangerous thing is stalling due to low speed, so a little bit extra drag can be a big deal. Looks like there’s so many wrinkles in most of that tape that it probably is being counterproductive.

Suppsed to be temporary before repairs. But in the photo, it looks like they are using it until they crash.

From my extremely limited understanding from once fucking a pilot, it’s not duct tape so much as like “air tape” or something. It’s not meant to hold things apart so much as create an aerodynamic stream so certain parts aren’t going to be ripped off. It’s supposed to be a temporary fix until proper maintenance can be done. Nothing is at risk of falling apart but there could be some potential risk of aerodynamic strain causing some problems if the tape wasn’t there. Also the side benefit of water not being able to get into the area that is being sealed. I’d say the amount of tape is probably surprising but not necessarily concerning.

Again, I’m not an expert. Just gathered knowledge from who the fuck knows where.

tl;dr tape make things safe when go zoomy but no hold together

Exactly what I always say about my code.

Okay, let’s roll with that Why should there be… holes? in the middle of the wing all over the place? And why should Russia(?) not be able to fix that?

That’s speed tape. It’s a bit thicker than the aluminum roll in your kitchen drawer with one side that’s sticky. Used as a temporary fix for minor issues.

That’s a lot of temporary minor issues.
