      Hank Venture: Hey, Brock?

      Brock Samson: [sighs] Yeah?

Hank Venture: How would you do it?

Brock Samson: You’re asleep, quick jerk of the neck, never feel a thing.

Hank Venture: You’ve thought about this.

      Brock Samson: Yes, I have.

It’s one of the theories as to why we haven’t seen any other intelligent species in the galaxy.

They develop to the point of being able to digitally create their own internal worlds and fantasies and infinitely live in a reality of their own making. They never have to bother exploring, communicating or broadcasting anything into the universe ever. Making them silent and invisible to everyone else.

like the paxans, THE END OF life aliens in voyager, although it can be considered alternate dimension, and the cytherians.

Yes! I love the concept of “inner space”, it’s really cool. A lot of SF authors play around with this idea. In particular, Greg Egan explores it a good bit in Diaspora, as well as Peter F. Hamilton in the Commonwealth Saga. I recall Alastair Reynolds touching on the idea in various ways in the Revelation Space novels buuut I don’t think things worked out very well in that instance.
