Hi all. I took over this community several months ago as the previous owner disappeared (as many do, no judgment.) Now I’m trying to regularly share news that is relevant for both developers and hobbyists. (Studio news, software milestones, talks, interesting columns/posts, etc.) I think I’ve done an okay job, but it’s still pretty low in search results when you search “gamedev Lemmy”, so I’m adding it here in case any of you out there are interested in the field.
I got here from a thread asking for smaller communities trying to replace subreddits, but I’d point out that I used to hang in an IRC chat with some r/gamedev mods, and they were cool. I even made pals with one of them. I just don’t trust Reddit as a company. So this is my way of trying to facilitate a healthy option, and follow the adage of “the grass is greener where you water it”.
So if you’re into video game development and the industry around it, feel free to join!
Nice :) but why not !gamedev@programming.dev? I’d prefer for LW to not grow too big. And the PD community is already well established

When I first looked all the gamedev communities seemed kinda dead, and none really stuck out, so I went with the server I was a part of. Later someone pointed out that PD was still alive and kicking to me after I already started posting to LW. I just kept posting to LW because I could ban any spam or jerks if the community ever decides that becomes a problem. But after I realized it wasn’t dead I followed it too, and have cross-posted once or twice from it. I’d encourage people to follow both. That just means more options and seems even healthier to me.
I’m with Blaze here, splintering is ill advised at the current number of MAUs and on top of that this kind of themed community seems perfect for the specialized instance programming.dev. If that community has a problem with moderation you can always get in touch with the instance admins. If the moderators of !gamedev@programming.dev are absent control of the community can be handed over.
Having parallel similar communities is usually not recommended as it splinters conversation and give potential posters choice overload https://lawsofux.com/choice-overload/
!fedigrow@lemm.ee has regular posts about people consolidating to avoid “shouting into the void” on their own, the most recent example being !pokemonTCGM@crazypeople.online and !ptcgp@sh.itjust.works
A big problem here is also lemmy.world, too. I heavily dislike adding more communities, thus centralizing more to it; programming.dev was fine, imo 🙂

As others have mentioned, you could reach out to the mods on !gamedev@programming.dev and offer to help moderate. Very often the mods will be happy with the extra help. It already has a lot of subscribers, but doesn’t have as much activity. Having you on board might be the perfect blend.
You can also decide you want to try and grow your own community, in which case it might still be helpful to cross post your posts into the other comm to reach interested users
