You wanna see me install a Raspberry Pi 3 into my minivan to run the rear seat entertainment system? 😅
I’m more of a lurker than anything else haha. I scour forums for issues my cars/bikes are dealing with, and occasionally will ask a question here or there. I don’t really make many posts anymore, unless I’m doing a specific job or troubleshooting process that I haven’t seen documented anywhere else.
Here you go. Some pics I took during the initial install a few years ago. I’m reworking the system now to mount it somewhere not almost totally inaccessible…
Yeah pretty much. The DVD player is some aftermarket unit that the previous owner had “professionally” installed (it was not done well, I fixed it’s issues).
I also installed a 2-into-1 HDMI switch, so it can use either the built-in raspberry pi or an external device, like a Switch console.
I like the setup. We only have two separate DVD players that is mounted on the headrests, but you can link one of them to slave the other. They only support divx files via fat32 formatted usb thumb drives, but also have rgb input, so I have been dreaming of making a better solution. I have a raspberry pi lying around so I might just end up doing something similar to you.
Permanently mounted or just something you can strap on?
(heh)
I had a dual screen setup in my former 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan for a cross-country move that took almost week (3 kids including a newborn). I ran a whole ass 4x2 HDMI matrix, with a raspberry pi/hard drive and Blu-ray player, out to two separate displays for the two older kids that could view either source independently. Really trick setup, but it was a cabling nightmare 😅 especially since I had to run an inverter and power strip for a few wallpower-only devices.
I still have the whole setup in a box somewhere. I pulled it all out after the roadtrip, threw it all in a box out of frustration, and never opened it back up.
Also, in reference to this question that I read wrong until just now:
So the media system was there already
My Sienna did not come with any of the factory-optioned multimedia inputs - I added those from junkyard Siennas when I did the inverter retrofit (also from a junkyard Sienna).
Our car isn’t made for elaborate stuff like that. Medium sized skoda estate that’s a couple of years away from retirement (Cars in general are smaller here in Norway). So my setup is just a pre made kit snapped on to the base of the headrests and the wiring is hanging freely.
I have to think carefully about how to do something like this and keep it practical and relatively safe from the kids at the same time. 😅
I do have a blog for my XR500 that I’m slowly working to make street legal. I initially called it a “restoration”, but it’s more of a “refresh with some light modernization” than anything else haha. I intend on keeping it as apocalypse-friendly as I can, since it’s kickstart-only, runs off a CDI system, and technically doesn’t need a battery (except for lighting)… The biggest hangup I have with that bike right now is the damn 23" front wheel that’s cracked. Not a single wheel repair shop I’ve called wants to touch it, a not-cracked 23" hoop is ~$150, and it’s too much work to convert it to 21" (that requires a disc brake conversion - I’m not tracking this thing, it’s just a commuter).
If you have content please post it. I’d love to have a motorcycle forum here but can’t really add content

I mean, I don’t not want to see that…

I want to know more about the raspberry pi 3 entertainment system!
If you insist 😅

That’s really cool! So the media system was there already, but you added the raspberry pi and modified it to accept hdmi as well?

Ah, too many of us lurkers. We have to get some content people to make content for us
