You could easily make the call that I deserve this ban. But after Jordan lied about a user the other day, calling them transphobic to try and get trans people (and others) on his side as a cis white man, I just did not have the patience for him to start talking @ me about anything related to gender.
Not only that, but his reply in itself was a bit of* a powertrip in my opinion. I reported the bottom comment as “seems a bit attack helicopter-y?” mainly because that user seemed to have a posting history that indicated being a bit of an outrage merchant. I didn’t necessarily want the comment removed, more than anything I was hoping to ping @ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone to keep an eye on the user. It feels like his reply was a bit of “I’ve seen this, I don’t care and I’m going to show you that I don’t care by replying to you publicly without acknowledging your report privately”.
I’m also pretty sure I upset his feefees with my comment the other day here on !yepowertrippinbastards@lemmy.dbzer0.com and he jumped at the opportunity to ban me from somewhere. Yeah, I baited that reaction but come on, a permanent ban on a first offence? Yeah, alright mate.
I didn’t even realise I was in a lemmy.world community, let alone one @jordanlund@lemmy.world moderates (god one of the other mods is PugJesus) or I pawbably wouldn’t have participated. Going to have to go through all my lemmy.world comms now and unsubscribe I think. Can you imagine running a comm about the heinous nature of policing and then being so authoritarian?
May I suggest you create your own competing community and moderate it the way you think it should be moderated? If you do well at it, and enough other people share your views on the moderation of the incumbent community, yours should win out in the end, no?
Network effect still plays, alternate privacy communities such as !privacy@programming.dev are still way less active than !privacy@lemmy.ml , despite the .ml admins regularly instance banning users https://lemmy.ml/modlog/14806
Sure, but doesn’t that sword cut both ways? Presumably, people talk to each other about bad moderation experiences too. I mean, that’s what we’re currently doing right now.
People knowing about moderation issues are in the minority. Most people keep using whatever community they subscribed to at one point in time.
You still have people posting to https://lemmy.world/c/moviesandtv@lemmy.film , Lemmy.film has been down for two years
Fair point. The question on my mind is what can be done to change that. I freely admit that I don’t have any immediate suggestions.
This post is a good action : https://lemmy.zip/post/48675001?scrollToComments=true
Not sure if LW admins will follow up on this
That’s crazy. I get not immediately blocking local posting when the remote is down, plenty of instances have issues with uptime. But it’s wild that the software doesn’t have some sort of timeout that causes the local to block posting unless or until a proof of life message from the remote. Should be a choice for the local too, I know Blahaj would pawbably set it shorter because of our intolerance for poor moderation of transphobia, whereas somewhere like lemmy.world would definitely want it longer.
You end up in a echo chambers
No, it is really hard to move people to another community even if the moderation is better because most discussions and debates are in thr bigger communities. Like i am not satisfied with the moderation against the zionists although it is not the worse but all of them spread their propaganda on news@lemmy.world
Hmm good idea.
!acab@quokk.au
Subscribed! Though it would be nice if that space ends up being more heavily focussed on Aussie policing, as !thepoliceproblem@lemmy.world definitely has a heavily US focus.
Considering I’m probably going to be 99.99% of the content posted, I’m sure it’ll have a strong aus slant!
What sort of content should be posted there, links to news, video of incidents, memes, all of the above?
Well, !thepoliceproblem@lemmy.world absolutely feels like a more serious space with a centrist lean and I think the name reflects that. However, with a name like !acab@quokk.au I’d assume that it’s going to be a touch less serious and a lot more left-leaning. In that case, I think all of the above might be good? I would’ve loved a space to post news and videos related to the cops in Melbourne protecting alt-right counter-protestors and pepper-spraying the original protestors a few weeks back. I might still go post about that to help add some content since it’s brand new.
Additionally, as mentioned in another comment, I don’t have a tonne of spare energy because of my disability, but I’d love to contribute to moderation if that’s something you need. I mainly didn’t feel like I’d be doing a space justice if I were to create it, nor have the spoons to find moderators to contribute either.
I don’t really think it’s that easy. Firstly, I have a disability and don’t have the energy to do so. Secondly, it’s not just this comm. Jordan is prolific across dozens of communities. This was* also kind of always the excuse given on reddit about power tripping moderators and I just don’t feel like it’s that good-faith of an argument to make.
First, you can hardly expect me to take into account any disability or energy levels of yours when making my suggestion when this is the first I’ve heard of either. It’s not like I know you. Second, it doesn’t have to be you. If this particular mod is this bad, surely there will be others who’ve experienced similar issues. Maybe you could reach out to them. This post would seem like a good place to do so.
With that said, I’m not trying to discourage people pointing out poor moderator behavior. Quite the contrary. I made this suggestion, because doing that on its own, well, it doesn’t do much to actually solve the problem. Perhaps some people can be shamed into better behavior, but in my experience the worst of the lot behave badly precisely because they have no shame in the first place. Unless this somehow makes the mod in question resign from the position, it’s effectively just venting.
Not that there’s anything wrong with that per se, but I personally prefer more tangible solutions.
I’m not here to tell you what you should or shouldn’t do though. That’s your business.
Regardless of my own disability, suggesting it is also assuming that any given person has the time, and it just feels like it’s excusing bad behaviour. Reaching out to the mod in question would be fairly useless, he’s prolific not just on Lemmy but right back from his career on Reddit too, hence the title of my post. However, I have pinged him, so let’s see if he has anything constructive to contribute.
Implying that merely posting here won’t help solve the pawblem at all is also kind of untrue in itself. I posted a couple weeks back about a very frivolous temp ban and that contributed to the ban being overturned and the mod in question seemingly being educated. Resignation/removal isn’t the only way to resolve poor moderator behaviour. This space is one of the few that strives to create a culture of mod accountability.
In saying all that, I’d love to see a !thepoliceproblem@lemmy.dbzer0.com so if anyone here wants to create that then I’ll be your first subscriber!
The centrist position on policing in the US is to cave in to the police union every single time, and to embrace the militarisation of the police. That’s happened under Democrats and Republicans alike.
While I respect the fact their union is effective at protecting it’s members, the fact is that union is largely responsible for shielding police from any accountability for their criminal actions.
I agree some sort of ACAB community would go down well here, so thanks for the suggestion.
That might be interesting. If nothing else, I suppose they deserve the option of presenting their view on things - for better or worse.
Anyway, good luck with everything no matter how you ultimately choose to go about it.
