After getting jealous from seeing the results of skill, patience, and stacking macro photos in the news, I was pleased to find today’s crop of photos using a Canon R6 + RF 100mm macro lens can still do a satisfying photo.

I’m guessing it’s a Common Wasp, but don’t have the knowledge to be sure!

… and the final photo from OP (j/k)

Wonderful photo. I would be too nervous getting so close to a wasp.

Heh. It was on its own, didn’t seem fussed, I’m guessing didn’t feel trapped, and I’d 100mm of lens plus a camera for it to attack before it reached me :)

Last year when I was walking in a park, a wasp decided to attack me for no reason. As I panicked I fell on the ground along with my DSLR, I had to run for 5 minutes without pause in order to escape from the wasp.

Got a little dent on my DSLR, but glad that it was still functional.

I recommend the Infinite Monkey Cage episode on Bees v Wasps, gives you more appreciation for wasps. (BBC Sounds)

I do a bit too, after I was picking gooseberries and what I thought was some dead leaves turned to be a wasp nest the size and weight of a ping-pong ball. I thought it was empty but no! Out poured a couple of dozen furious (or terrified) wasps. Wasn’t stung, but aaaaiiiieeee!!!

Oh dear, didn’t mean to trigger people with the wasp. It would be a bit bizarre to mark it NSFW, and there’s aren’t any other tags, so I can only apologize to anyone seriously poked. For that matter, surely lots of macro work is with insects and spiders, so phobic people are asking for trouble viewing this community!

Great photo, just a bastard of a subject that probably deserves insecticide.
